Why am I doing this?
[Movement earned $94.88 in December, an amount of money which I was pleased to donate to NFAR. The fund-raising drive for NFAR is now concluded, although anyone who would like to buy the ebook is still welcome to do so.]
My son has an autistic spectrum condition. At the time I was writing Movement, he and I were struggling to understand each other. It doesn’t feel right to say that Hannah’s character was inspired by him, because he and Hannah have almost nothing in common, but Hannah’s personality and her unique perception of time definitely grew out of my floundering desperation to comprehend his mental architecture.
I would like this story to reach as many readers as possible, and I would like families who are struggling to live with and understand autism to have the kind of support we do. I wish every autistic child could have a personal attendant at school. I wish every set of parents had access to a competent therapist and to activities where their children are not only tolerated, but welcomed.
NFAR is working to make that dream a reality for more families, and I would like to help. I’ve donated money out of my own pocket to NFAR already. Now, I’m asking others to do the same. You can make a direct donation at the NFAR web site. Or if you’d like to get something in exchange for your gift, you can buy a copy of Movement for yourself or for someone who needs it. 70% of the Amazon purchase price comes to me as royalties, and will go directly to NFAR.
(The fund-raising drive for NFAR is now concluded. Thank you to everyone who helped support this worthy cause!)
